Stand-up defense first?

Defense on the ground is considered the main priority for white belts and escapes, preventing sweeps, and proper positioning in relation to the mat, your partner, etc are considered prime. Danaher and Ryan have said many times that getting good at defense, escapes specifically, is vital to getting comfortable with taking risks towards submissions.

I don’t see this mentality to the same degree with stand-up and takedowns. Proper base, preventing under-hooks, head height, early and late escapes from common take-downs, and other components to defensive standup. In this sub when someone asks for help with their shitty takedown game, it’s either “pull guard” or “learn a few good takedowns and focus on just them for duration.” But shouldn’t step one be, try to become impossible to take down first?

What are your favorite ways/tips/instructionals etc to stay vertical especially when you are outclassed on the feet or for people who have been focused entirely on offense from the start?
