The BenQ ScreenBar Halo 2 is so great ! (Review)
People often ask me why they should install a light bar above their monitor when a simple desk lamp or ceiling light would do the trick. In reality, it’s one of the most underrated upgrades you can make to a setup.
The problem with traditional lighting is that it either creates annoying glares on the screen or takes up unnecessary space on your desk. A light bar, on the other hand, projects light strictly downwards onto your workspace without ever hitting the screen itself. This eliminates eye strain caused by the contrast between a bright monitor and a dark room, while freeing up valuable desk real estate. It’s the perfect blend of ergonomics, eye comfort, and minimalism.
It’s simple: since I installed this light bar on my monitor, I can’t live without it. I was using a more basic model before, but switching to the BenQ ScreenBar Halo 2 is truly a next-level experience. It adds that little extra something that completely changes my daily comfort.
The first thing that strikes you is the precision of the new wireless controller. Before, my settings were pretty basic and mostly done by feel. Here, the brightness and color temperature are clearly displayed on the dial, allowing me to hit the perfect setting every time. I can switch from a cool white to stay focused during a rush to a much warmer light in the evening to wind down, and it’s a real pleasure to see exactly what value I’m setting.
In terms of installation, it couldn’t be easier. I just plugged in the USB cable and that was it. It’s perfectly stable on my Studio Display, which is essential for keeping that clean look. This minimalist side is exactly what I’m looking for: it replaces a traditional desk lamp perfectly by freeing up all my workspace, all without any cables cluttering the desk thanks to the wireless remote. The whole setup stays very clean and perfectly respects the aesthetic of my workspace.
The overall atmosphere is also much better, especially thanks to the backlight on the rear. When work or writing sessions run late, that diffused glow behind the screen makes everything much less aggressive on the eyes. Speaking of comfort, the color management is impeccable: the rendering on the desk is natural and very accurate, and you can really fine-tune the vibe depending on your mood.
Finally, a small practical detail has really simplified my life: the option to add a camera. The dedicated mount allows me to place my camera much more securely on top, right above the Studio Display, whereas before it always felt a bit unstable. In the end, the Halo 2 doesn't try to be flash, but it makes my workspace so much cleaner and more pleasant that I can't imagine going back.
Ultimately, the ScreenBar Halo 2 isn't the kind of accessory that tries to impress with its looks. It’s that very subtlety that makes it so strong. That said, I’ve tried a ton of them over the years. I’ve tested plenty of competing models, often cheaper ones, thinking the result would probably be the same. But I always end up coming back to BenQ.
There is a real difference in light flow control and build quality that I just don't find elsewhere. It blends perfectly into the setup, frees up space, and provides a level of visual comfort you can't live without once you've tasted it. It’s an investment that might not be obvious at first glance, but you feel it every single day in your productivity and reduced eye fatigue. If you're looking for the most refined version of what’s available today, this is definitely the one to go for.
