about a car accident i happened upon as the first person

just wondering if this makes sense at all, i don't normally write poetry. whether it evokes those same visceral images and feelings for you, or if that's just me, because i was there.

---

engine oil and antifreeze and stale old sweat
exhaust gas, loud rolling tire noise
cutting up the silence behind
the idling diesel motor and the scattered voices.
cold highway, hard under feet
the sound so eerily bouncing
like the blinking blue lights
against the street

and it really did all it could
but it can only do so much
a safety cell is a human feature
the launch, the drop
the roll, then the stop
are just nature.
glass and plastic shattered on the ground
cut up faces and arms
blood on clothes and hands ripped by shards

but nobody saw
under the barely lit sky
faint orange above
pitch black on the road with no light
blinking red windmills, hundreds, far away
the dark fading slowly, horizon tapered grey
a long drive home when you're nearly there
your whole world ahead, still not even aware
arms holding you, curled up against her side
the winding hills stretching north
were the last thing you saw before you died.
