The United States is becoming totalitarian because almost no one taking action is Libertarian-Center.
Almost the entire libertarian end of the political compass in the US is concentrated to far left and far right, under the banners of Anarcho-Communism / Antifa / Liberal Democratic Socialism (far to the lib-left) and Anarcho-Capitalism / Voluntaryism / Anarcho-Primitivism (far to the lib-right).
Authoritarians have centralized or at least can coexist well enough with each other to act like they are centralized. They have shown they have that ability when it's expedient. They can put aside disputes on economics for a moment to oppress minorities and the underprivileged, enact mass surveillance and strip away individual liberties together. They are a police wedge, and we are scattered. We even have people who say they are for liberty but are not, mainly tankies and Corporatists claiming to be Socialists or Anarchists.
That's why Trump is still president. Until we unite our efforts in a similar way for better reasons, things aren't going to get better for anyone.
