How to properly create high resolution figures for a manuscript?

I have always struggled to make high resolution images for manuscripts, once converting the word document into a PDF, it always looks super pixelated. My advisor tells me to export as JPG at 300 dpi, but to me it still looks poor quality. Is there something I am missing or doing incorrectly?

I use powerpoint, and have preferences set to no compression of images and high fidelity.

Ivy league vs top 50 university for postdoc

I have two options for starting my postdoc next year (STEM - chem/bio), and I don't know how to choose which is the better option

  1. Ivy league - Guaranteed funding, minimum 3-4 years as it generally takes that long to publish. Working on 'high-risk high-reward' stuff. High cost of living, and ~12 hours away by car from my hometown. Young professor, not a long track record of postdoc-faculty transitions. Expects me to be in lab 5-6 days a week, but flexible with holidays.

  2. Top 50 - Uncertain about funding (will know summer next year), but willing to apply for a 2-year fellowship with me (due this fall). Lower cost of living, ~4 hour drive from hometown. Experienced professor, several have gone on to obtain faculty positions. Didn't mention work-hours expectation when asked about mentorship style.

Both potential supervisors are supportive of my goals and keen to help me reach my goal of obtaining a faculty position. Both align well with my research interests, and both publish in high impact journals.

I am leaning towards Top 50 at the moment, but am concerned about the uncertainty with funding. I will need to choose one of these options before applying for any grants that due this fall - the Ivy league supervisor wants to apply as well, and I can't apply twice.

Any advice is much appreciated!! TIA

When do I send a follow up email?

I had an initial interview for a potential postdoc position with a professor from an ivy league school last Monday. It was a very positive interview, and I expressed my interest to continue with the next interview (with the full lab) on the Tuesday. They mentioned that they respond very quickly (and in my experience they have). They also mentioned that they have a busy month this month. However, it's been 6 days now and I haven't heard any response back. Is it appropriate, and if so when, to email them a follow-up/reminder about this? TIA!

I have a very important postdoc interview in a week over zoom. I am using this time to dive deep into the PI's research, but realistically, I don't think it's fair to expect a prospective student to be an expert on a subject in the first interview. With that said, is it okay to refer to my notes about his research that I take down while learning about it? My feeling is that it can look good because I've 'done my research' and show that I care, but I don't know how that could be viewed from their perspective.

Thanks!

EDIT: Thanks everyone for the comments. This certainly made things much simpler to prepare for and saved me time and lots of headaches!
