Considering buying a home in Petersburg

Hello! I'm a Richmond native and looking to buy my first home. There are a lot of homes in Walnut Hill that are within my price range but my oldest son who is a realtor said crime is bad in the burg. I'm a single mom with a teen son that goes to HS in Richmond but can't really afford to buy in RVA. Midlo just doesn't have the same appeal and since it's almost equadistance, Petersburg is on my radar. What's it like living in Petersburg? I'm a photographer and photographed a beautiful home over the course of a week probably 10 years back and felt safe- short of one scary encounter when a gigantic man started banging on my car window while I was trying to get out of a parking space. I've lived all over Richmond, in some of the best and worst neighborhoods, currently live downtown and have decent street smarts. Not much phases me but the number of large undervalued homes on the market in Petersburg does make me wonder. Is it the wild west? I mean no insult. Just looking for an honest perspective. I heard gunshots for almost 11 years living in Fulton Hill and would rather not experience a repeat.

Forgot to mention that my son would continue to go to HS in Richmond. Thank you to everyone that has offered advice either way. Very much appreciated!
