North American road trip advice!

We are a British couple currently planning a road trip in North America. Last year we road tripped around the West including: Colorado,New Mexico, Arizona, California, Utah,Nevada,Wyoming, Idaho, Washington and Oregon. The main reason for this area was the amount of National Parks within reasonable proximity to each other and the amount of different landscapes from Mountains to forests to red rock canyons. We didn’t manage to visit all the parks in this area but the majority.

For our next road trip we are thinking of road tripping around the south including Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Arkansas, Tennessee and North and South Carolina.
However I’m still very undecided as although I’m sure these areas will have incredibly beautiful landscape as far as I can see they don’t offer as much variety as the West.

Our main reason for road tripping is we both love nature, seeing the animals, diverse landscapes and getting away from the hustle and bustle of city’s. We love driving through forests and deserts and exploring the small towns and getting up at 3am to get to national parks for sunrise.

Has anyone done both The West and The South and have some opinions and and advice on which you preferred and why?
