Yeah I’m gonna make that claim, ice scream is the best mobile horror series.

It’s not the scariest one obviously, but its main appeal is that it’s mild horror that heavily focuses on story telling, and it’s done so well even for mobile horror standards.

Gameplay:
If you said it’s like granny and other games like that where you solve puzzles while running from an entity you wouldn’t be entirely wrong but it doesn’t stop their, it has unique gameplay mechanic that make each chapter or set of chapters stand out 1-3 have the iconic travling, 4 has nothing LMAO, 5-6 have the character swapping 7 had a different character swapping mechanic and bought back the travling for 1 section of gameplay and 8 was more mission based with its puzzles they even had some fun,unique mini games in between puzzles to further give each game its own thing all the chapters weren’t repetitive clones of each other in a different setting like how some people claim besides each game minus 8 was short so it was closer to playing a 3 hour long game rather then 8 full games that are all the same

Characters:
Ohhhh boy the characters in this series are so well written first off let’s talk about J the main character out of the 4 kids he has the most character development, in the 1st 3 games he was so scared to get people in danger he kept to himself about rod kidnapping his friends like how in IS2 where he’s able to tell Mike and Charlie about rod kidnapping Liz but chooses not to because he didn’t want them to panic but in IS3 Charlie questions why he didn’t tell him about Liz’s kidnapping and even questioned if he safe even still being friends with him after J’s friends get taken to rod’s factory J realizes that he shouldn’t have kept secret from the people he can trust so in 4-8 he becomes a leader who heavily helped solving his and his friend’s problems, Mike also has a very good arch where he goes from someone who dose dose stuff without thinking just to try to save Liz without even thinking about himself and then in 5-8 he becomes a brave warrior who determined by his love for Liz to look out for his friends and Liz she’s has a very girly personality, a couple small character traits but the reason she is important to the friend group is for her presence because as I said Mike is driven by his love for Liz and Charlie a pretty fun character to he’s basically depicted as some one who wants to be a hero, is capable but is scared or plays it safe most of the time and has a little development where he becomes more brave by the end of IS8 but he’s mostly the comic relief. And rod, OMG he’s so well written as a villain he’s a balance between threatening, evil, darkly comedic and also sympathetic on a more twisted perspective, at first he comes off as a creepy ice cream man that’s a cereal killer but they go beyond that concept, they go out of their way to show every side of him, they show his coping skills, his ptsd, his childhood the way he sees the world, in retrospect he’s someone who was neglected and put down and never had the guidance needed to fit in with society, he spent his whole adult hood running away from his past because he thought it would make his life better which is what he always chose to believe until his last straw broke in the final boss of IS8 where he realized his crimes only created more victims and hated the monster he became then questioned himself and had no reason to keep going then killed himself, and while we’re talking about villans I might as well bring up sister Madeline “assuming she counts” yes she’s evil nun but evil nun lore is basically Ice scream lore so she’s here she has a great story about how she lost her daughter and made a deal with nazrat to bring back her daughter under tight conditions she didn’t follow causing her to become evil due to her curse and some people may think “oh cmon this is just fan service” but it’s not the backstory is done so well in a way that makes sence in both ice scream and evil nun combined and and the ending where rod dies in sister Madeline’s arms hits even harder because of the context, so yeah that’s it for the characters over all great characters.

Story:
There was no way I would make an ice scream review without talking about its story, its builds itself In a way where it just works the structure hose from seeing rod do dirty work in the neighborhood to every piece of lore being progressively unfolded in such an amazing way, the games focus on both J and his friend’s story line and rod’s story line, J and his friend’s story line being the primary story line where we see them go from kids who do what they can to save each other to badasses that are never scared of rod and we see rod as an adult ice cream man who ruthlessly kidnaps children and the series gradually provides more and more about rod’s past that leaves you thinking “OMG this is so dark and sad” when you look at rod’s backstory in retrospect one thing I always like is that ice scream didn’t focus on one story line over the other it focused on both rod and J’s story and by the end of IS8 J and his friends are a direct parallel to rod because they spend the entire series fighting for their lives but they use their shared trauma to stand against rod meanwhile rod spent his whole life running away from his trauma making him who he is in the series

Horror:

While limited it’s actually done pretty well IS3 give off a sorta mysterious/ suspicious style of horror and 4-8 give a more intence RPG style of horror, being mild horror tho the perspectives made a lot of sence 1-3’s main question was “who is rod” 4-8’s was “how can rod be defeated” I think both styles work for their perspective chapters and even the factory itself was able to have interesting locations that feel run down and facinating

Overall ice scream is absolutely peak mobile horror and doesn’t get enough appreciation for how well written it is IMO anyways if you made it this far thx for reading

so we open with rebeca getting a call from anthony where he tells her that mr meat escaped and is building a new location in china "i looked up where pork was most popular and china came up hence why mr meat said where the taste of good pork is apprieciated" and also he had to leave america cause he was wanted. so rebeca insists on going with anthony to china to track down mr meat and uncover his secrets. when they make it to the new location mr meat knocks anthony and rebeca unconsious and wake up in their own jail cell reminiciant to the one in the old location. the gameplay is basiclly switching between anthony and rebeca to complete puzzles so they can find some suspicious activity to show to the chiniese poliece
also its later revealed that mr meat had to kill pig 13/frank miller so they can start their new buisness

Like yes, rod and sister Madeline did stuff nobody should ever do regardless of their trauma, but after they established their trauma, it’s kinda hard not to sympathize with them. You don’t root for them, but it’s pretty emotional seeing them get this pay off when you know how they became the monsters they were.

Sister Madeline lost her entire family to WW2 including her daughter Elisa causing her to make so many crazy decisions down the line, which yeah I can’t sympathize that much with but Rod is a totally different story, rod is the re incarnation of Elisa, when he was very young he was abused by sister Madeline prompting the other nuns to give him to Joseph and when Rod was with Joseph, Joseph focused more on his business then raising rod and when Rod started to get bullied, Joseph did nothing then later on Rod lost Joseph the only family he had then still having trust issues with Sister Madeline when he still blindly remembers being abused by her going forward from here, Rod spent his entire life running away from his trauma, making him the monster his mask resembles

To be absolutely clear I do not agree with how they handled their trauma but just their background alone makes them sympathetic on a twisted perspective

In the ending of IS8 rod stairs in regret of his crimes, he realizes that they didn’t fix anything from his past they just created more victims, and he questions his life he questions himself he realizes that he can’t fix his mistakes and whats said and done is said and done then sees no reason to keep going in life and kills himself by trying to drown himself in the tampered cauldron of ice cream then sister Madeline. Here’s what happens and saves rod also getting her self covered in ice cream in the process the words sister Madeline says to rod while she holds him in her arms
Makes me so emotional knowing that this is a mother and son that have been separated for years
She shares her final goodbyes with him before they wither into stone in the context of the scene combined with their backgrounds, make it very dark and sad, even though you don’t root for them, during replays I don’t cry. I get emotional, but I don’t cry, but the first few times I beat this game, I cried.

not because I didn’t want Rod and sister Madeline to die they obviously deserve to be punished for their actions, but because of how screwed up their backgrounds are it makes the scene sad but beautiful in a way

I don’t know am I just crazy Let me know your thoughts.

Not I know some people have very strong opinions on ice scream having 8 damn games and yes’s that sounds like a lot but the whole series needed it, every chapter minus 8 was short and only had little crumbs about the story,

I’m not gonna defend 2026 Keplerians but ice scream before that Keplerians Network board meeting took place it was perfect, I am defending ice scream it was a mild horror game series that had a great story, well crafted world building, likable characters and even gameplay that went beyond just a granny clone, yes even the factory games,

I’ve also seen arguments saying that the factory games are childish, yeah I never understood where the hell this comes from the series didn’t become more childish, 4-8 tied in perfectly with 1-3, the few arguments I do see are the games horror is low horror which 1st of all that was always the case for ice scream, it was never aiming to be an intence horror game it was a mild one that focused heavily on story telling and that story telling is still very good i’m not just talking about learning about Rod‘s back story but I’m spysyficlly talking about J and his friend’s journey there character growth where they start as ordinary to a team that isn’t scared of anything and could always reley on each other , the 2nd point I see are the comedic moments, which 1st off all yes they exist but they aren’t distracting from the main core of the game and was able to have even more seriously taken moments then juvinile/comedic moments oh and don’t act like the 1st 3 games don’t have elements like that, rods theme song was comedic, the Spanish guy at the mall that hates his job was comedic, rod comedic but also evil which still carries in 4-8 and Charlie saying he’s not scared of rod when he’s hiding in a box, these are clear pieces of evidence that even the OG games weren’t afraid to be campy at times

Yes 4-8 go for a more intence RPG vibe rather then the mysterious/suspicious vibe 1-3 had but different doesn’t mean childish and the change of vibe works here it doesn’t make the game less scary it just give the game I different angle

Another argument I’ve seen is after 4 the series felt like a drag which to that I say “no it didn’t as I said before each chapter was short and had little information, it was milked but it was milked for world building and as far as those games being a drag goes they didn’t feel like a drag in fact it was kinda obvious that the series would end after IS8 or 7 because after you save Mike you know you still have to save Liz Charlie and then find a way to take down rods empire you don’t sit through those games thinking uhh when is this gonna eeennnddd… you sit through it thinking, OMG how is this all gonna play out when it’s all set and done

And by the end of 8 J and his friends are a direct parallel to rod because throughout the entire series J and his friends were constantly fighting for their lives but they use their shared trauma to stand up against rod mean while rod spent his entire life running away from his trauma making him who he is in the events of the series

The gameplay is also still very good the puzzles are chalanging and satisfying, the original gameplay mechanics are there and work very well and overall ice scream is one of the best octology a in gaming

And as far as Keplerians milking ice scream for money goes, while I didn’t go over a lot here, I garnered you they loved this series as much as any developer loves what they created, if it was milked for money then it was milked for both money and world building they saw the opportunity’s ice scream would give them and they took those opportunities to also make somthing great out of it, and regardless if the sequels were cash grabs a lot of sequels to franchise are cash grabs it’s one of the reasons who most movies/games have sequels
I don’t care if they were made for money I just care if they were good and they are,

However despite me relentlessly praising the main ice scream octology I cannot defend the Knetwork side stories although they are admittingly kinda cool they don’t have much of a reason to exsist and don’t do much and combined that with it being locked behind internet sigh…

But that isn’t what I’m talking about I’m talking about the main ice scream octology and why that was so good and why it made sence to be milked to 8 separate games, I don’t even view it as eight games I viewed it as one big game with three different acts 1-3 being the 1st act where J and his friend’s problems start, 4-7 where they solve their problems and 8 where they come togather and stand against rod one last time
