I Think Reddit Is a Terrible Place to Get News

I know this is probably unpopular on Reddit itself, but I honestly think a lot of people trust this site way more than they should when it comes to news and factual information.

I’m not saying Reddit is useless. Far from it. It’s one of the best places online for hobbies, troubleshooting, random questions, personal experiences, and finding communities around specific interests. I’ve learned a ton from this site over the years.

But I think people confuse “highly upvoted” with “true,” and those are definitely not the same thing.

A post getting 50k upvotes usually just means a lot of people liked it, agreed with it, found it emotional, or wanted it to be true. That doesn’t mean it’s accurate. Some of the most confidently written comments on this site are completely wrong, especially during breaking news events.

The Boston Marathon bombing is probably the biggest example. Reddit users basically turned into internet detectives and wrongly identified innocent people as suspects, including a missing college student named Sunil Tripathi. The rumors spread so far that even parts of the media repeated them before the actual suspects were confirmed. Reddit later apologized for the whole thing.

And honestly, we still see similar stuff happen all the time: • clipped videos missing context • fake screenshots • headlines people never read past • rumors spreading faster than corrections • heavily biased communities convincing themselves they’re objective

I also think a lot of big subreddits become echo chambers over time. Certain opinions get massively rewarded while others get buried instantly. After a while, people start thinking “everyone agrees with this” when really they’re just surrounded by people who think the same way.

None of this means Reddit is evil or worthless. I still use it constantly. I just think Reddit works best as a place to discover information, not as the final authority on whether something is true.

If it’s politics, health, science, finance, world events, or anything serious, people should probably verify things somewhere outside of Reddit before accepting them as fact.

TL;DR: Reddit is great for discussion and discovering ideas. It’s terrible as a standalone source of truth.
