SBI silently changed my mobile number format and broke all my UPI apps
Has anyone else been facing issues with UPI apps linked with an SBI bank account, throwing an error like:
>No bank account found linked to your number. Make sure this phone number is linked to your bank account.
Error with GPay app (number erased)
All my UPI apps suddenly stopped working with my SBI account.
When I tried logging into SBI NetBanking to verify my number, the website blocked me and asked me to confirm my mobile number because, apparently, their records had been updated.
Here’s the crazy part:
- Entering my number as +91 XXXXXXXXXX gives an "invalid number" error.
- The system only accepts it as 091 XXXXXXXXXX.
- But I never receive the OTP when entered that way.

It looks like SBI updated their records by replacing +91 with 091, and that completely broke UPI verification. Now, even SBI’s own OTP system can’t properly recognize the number format they switched to.
The branch staff were pretty helpless, too. The only thing they could do was escalate it to senior officials.
I genuinely don’t understand what they were thinking. +91 is the standard international format used almost everywhere.
Every day my confidence in SBI as a functioning organization keeps dropping.
