This morning while walking my 5 y old German Shepherd, we came upon two cats, all of us were suprised. It all happened so fast. One cat took off, the other cat proceeded to attack both me and my dog. Was kicking at the cat to get cat away from us while trying to move on. Cat latched onto my dog's butt and dog was howling and running trying to get away. Finally got the cat off him and the cat continued coming after both of us. We ended up in the street and cat finally ran when car came down street. Cat moved out of the street onto the opposite side of street, sat in the bushes looking at us like, "c'mon, you want some more?" Me an dog skeddadled out of there fast! I reported it to animal control and am taking boy to vet today for rabies booster--checked for blood/puncture and could not find one.
My question is, "should my GSD have fought that cat? He was just trying to get away and get that cat off of him. I had visions that my pupper would have turned around and made mincemeat out of that cat. No so much this time.
Appreciate the feedback and please don't be rude or insulting. I'm a bit shaken already by the incident.
EDIT WITH ADDITIONAL REMARKS:
Thanks all for your feedback. Most agree it was the right thing to do to get out of there and not engage with the cat. As I now understand it, cats can do some serious damage and if he had engaged he may have won the battle, but lost the war with injuries. Plus, I really would not have wanted the cat hurt anyway. Pup got a rabies booster, vet thoroughly checked his fluffy butt for any blood, crust, heat, etc and found none. We will keep an eye on things (and the cat as well). Also, informed animal control in the event a pattern may emerge.
