I have my axolotl in a 55 gallon tank

Temperature is 64°

Ph is 8.2 (its always been like that ever since I got my axy about 3 years ago)

Ammonia 0ppm

Nitrite 0ppm

Nitrate between 40ppm amd 80ppm I know that is really bad. I literally did a 30% water change on 5-01-26 and then checked it today and saw that it was high so I did another 30% water change today (5-05-26). I tested the nitrate specifically again after the water change and it still says 40 to 80. Is there any advise? I think this is a situation that you'd need to tub the axolotl, but I'd like to see if there's anything else to do? I've tried water changes, what else is there?

I've got 2 small anubia plants in there and like 5 or 6 Indian almond leaves as well to hopefully lower ph.

Please no hate, I'm trying.

I've got two decent sized drift wood pieces I'd like to put in my axolotl tank so that I can hopefully lower ph. What's the best and hopefully fastest way to make them safe for the tank? I previously tried baking them, but wasn't able to put them in due to moving. I'm not sure boiling would work since they are too big for any of the pots I have and I don't think pouring boiling water onto them and having it drain is safe for the pipes in my house. I could bake again, but is there anything else I'm missing?

I have had my axololt since June of 2022. She is 3 years old, turning 4 in September. I've been noticing her gills turning inward. I've seen things about if their gills cur forward it could be a sign of stress, but I don't think this is what's going on.

The first photo is my axolotl, the second is a photo of the parameters.

The temperature is 64°F

She's in a 55 gallon tank that's only filled 2/3 of the way

I have two small anubia thick leaf plants in there to help with parameters

The ph is high, but it does not fluctuate and I have put Indian almost leaves in, but it's always stays the same at 8.2

Nitrate is a little higher since I haven't been able to do a water change due to work being crazy.

Ph: 8.2

Ammonia: 0ppm

Nitrite: 0ppm

Nitrate: 40 ppm
