Life in Kaskaskia

I stopped in Kaskaskia to see the bell last week. Probably one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been in Illinois or anywhere. Couldn’t have asked for better weather. I wish I’d brought lunch and eaten outside. Stunning pastoral views all around. I would love to go back with a real camera. The island is a gorgeous place but it was a little bit eerie too. I haven’t felt that far removed from civilization in a while. It raises a ton of questions for me. Like, how does one live there? It seems like a place you can’t live by accident. How does anything work logistically? Internet, power, water, gas? And who’s in charge? The village is apparently incorporated but there’s no post office or anything, no library, nothing online. Who’s the mayor? What type of people live there? I’ve been all over the state and this is the first time I’ve ever thought “opposite of Chicago.” It is such a fascinating, but elusive place and I just want to learn more about the island and the people who live there.
