The Biggest Pickleball Skill Isn’t a Shot
I was reflecting on my pickleball journey and realized that almost every major improvement I’ve made came from some kind of realization either by watching myself play, reading something online, or seeing a concept explained in an instructional video. First it was learning the different shots. Then it became understanding when to use them. After that, I started seeing why certain shot combinations and patterns worked together. Eventually I realized that most advice in pickleball is partly true and partly false at the same time. Almost everything is situational. Understanding the principle behind something is a much stronger foundation for developing your own game than blindly following the latest trend or copying whatever a high-level player or pro says. Somewhere along the way, I got caught up in the whole “banger vs dinker” identity debate, but eventually I realized that high-level pickleballers don’t really think that way. Every shot has a place and purpose. There isn’t really a “correct style” beyond what is effective in a given situation. Looking back, I think a lot of players who feel stuck at a certain level may not need a new shot as much as they need a deeper understanding of the game itself. In my experience, deeper understanding has been one of the strongest leading indicators of actual pickleball growth and development.
TLDR: The Biggest Pickleball Skill Isn't a Shot - Its Upgrading your understanding of the game and applying it to your own.
