What separates a good contractor from a great one?
About to start my journey into the world of contracting and curious to hear from those more experienced..what separates the good from the great?

I was recently laid off by my company (tech) and after some time away from corporate I just can’t bring myself to go back in as a perm. Contracting has appealed for a while - in fact I wish I’d done it sooner! I have c. 1 year of living expenses from the payout and general savings.
However I get mixed responses depending on who I speak to - some recruiters have said it’s the worst time in memory, others have said if you’re proactive there is definitely work out there.
What’s your view?
Thanks in advance.
EDIT - just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for the fantastic replies below - as outlined I’ll be looking for perm AND contract roles simultaneously! Thanks for being such a friendly and helpful community.
