Bluegrass foundations

Playing more and more Dead songs on my acoustic and I’ve decided I really should start learning some bluegrass foundations like rhythm G to C transitions and stuff like that to better understand Jerry’s approach to his chord progressions since he really was a picker at heart. Any tips are appreciated.

Light strings: 12-54 or 12-53

New guitar, FGX5, and I’m working through the process of finding my preferred string set. I prefer PB strings and I’m a fan D’Addario EJ16, but I can’t stop thinking about the extra low end Martin MA540 set has with .054 low E and .025 G. The stringjoy 12-54 were just ok for me and the Martins were a bit higher tension.

Has anyone tried customizing a set of EJ16 with the upsized low E and G? I have a set on order so I’ll find out soon enough…just asking around to see if there are any experiences to be shared.

FGX5 came in to the shop today, they’ve been on order for weeks. They had two and I got first dibs. This is the one that sounded magical. The switch from satin to gloss finish is beautiful and it came setup from Hamamatsu so it plays like butter. Elixer strings aren’t my favorite and I have some stringjoys to try out.

Played a bunch of way more expensive guitars today at a local shop and some weren’t setup that well and just didn’t sound that good to me. My triple O HPL sounds better to me, is it the setup? I was expecting too much from these guitars and finally getting to play them in person didn’t live up to my expectations. Not sure what it was exactly but playing my guitar after the shop visit made me appreciate it that much more.

I want to get a dread and I did find one that spoke to me…a dread that shall not be named so I don’t anger the AI overlords.
