Seattle City Council passes $300k in emergency funding for Trans community

Seattle City Council passes $300k in emergency funding for Trans community

<Relevance to the pod: talked about in a June episode>

Update to the the WaPo reporting back in June:

TLDR: "...the Seattle City Council unanimously passed $300,000 in emergency funding for Trans and Queer people."

A choice quote:

"One community member by the name of “Purple Six,” thanked the council for doing the “barest minimum,” regarding the proposal, which should have been accomplished a year ago.

“This is peanut money. This is such a small amount of money for this City. You are spending millions to expand fucking Flock cameras, and in that respect, anyone here who votes against such a small amount of money— the peanut money that my community needs— anyone who votes against it is signaling strongly that they are on the side of atrocity,” Purple Six said. “They are on the side of bigotry. They are on the side of the people who are brandishing guns on my community.”

Trans people are fleeing red states for Seattle. The city can’t keep up.

<Relevance to the pod: talked about in recent ep>

The WaPo story was also front page in the Seattle Times today.

Main thing that ground my gears was citing the NORC poll and the "400,000 trans adults fled red states in the six months after the 2024 election" line with zero critical analysis.

On the flip sode, the article does feature interviews with actual humans who used a Seattle non-profit to help them leave Flordia, so while I think the migration number is less than 400k I do believe it's greater than zero.

America Has a Masculinity Crisis [NYT - The Opinions]

[Relevance to the pod - prior discussions of "The Opinions" podcast/micro-looting, is the woke era dead, etc]

As the tides of the woke era continue to ebb, I'm fascinated when I come across anything feels like cracking open a time capsule.

A new "The Opinions" episode dropped this morning, and it's like hopping out of the DeLorean in 2018. Bangers like:

 • "I think the reality is that we’ve always had patriarchy at the intersection of capitalism and white supremacy, and how those things feast on one another and lift one another."
 • "...in my own thinking around white supremacy, I had to come to, like — this is just being a narcissistic millennial in the world — but what do I stand to gain from dismantling white supremacy, a system that seems to benefit me in so many ways?"

To be fair to Spiegelman, she tries to push the conversation in a few interesting ways (poking at the "men are trash" discorse), but overall the conversation just reminded me how much this language feels dated.
