From 6.8 to 5.8 in 3.5 months
Just wanna share my story here. Got diagnosed with type 2 late January this year, here with an HBA1c of 6.8. It was discovered through a routine lab test, I thought i just had an UTI but I knew there’s something wrong with my body. Ive been peeing alot and there’s this chronic numbness on my hands, so I had a urinalysis which came back with a glucose4+ which terrified me and devastated me like most of you.
For context, I am 35m slightly active lifestyle but have been overweight for almost a decade. I have been playing sports, walking and do go to the gym but I must say that I do have a fairly bad diet.
Last year was a difficult year for me. I was extremely stressed, gets insomnia from time to time, extremely bad diet and gained 8kg. Not gonna bore you with deets but fast forward today I just got the result from my lab it came down to hba1c of 5.8, FBS from 124 to 105, sgpt is now normal, uric acid is just a hair above normal. I also made a risky decision to just do this by purely altering my lifestyle without the help of any drugs (my endo recommended metformin).
The things I changed were increasing my strength training from 2-3x a week to 6x /week, play basketball 2-3x /week, up the volume of my steps to 8k-15k almost every day, takes magnesium glycinate to help with sleep and stress, i also tried to do fasting for 40hours but it just doesnt work for me since my activity is high and the risk of hypo.
My diet is I think the keypart of my journey. I dont eat fast food anymore.introduced a lot of fiber and protein to my diet although I still eat carbs like 1/2-3/4 cup of rice but I always pair them with good portion of protein, healthy fats and fiber. Chia seeds, sourdough and kimchi were game changer for me.
Muscles are now significantly visible, lost 9kg, waistline from 40” to now 35.8”, leaner face, better performance on the court, not sluggish, no more snoring, better after meal glucose (1hr spike is 120s - 160s but 2nd hour returns to baseline 90s - 100s).
I know this is just a start and have long ways to go but I am just happy about this small progress of mine!
