Kitten with a Cold
We brought home our Maine Coon kitten on April 7. He was absolutely traumatized by being in a car; when I met the breeder, she was cleaning him since he had vomited and pooped all over himself in the crate. While I drove him home, he was shaking uncontrollably and drooling — long strings of saliva hanging out of his mouth. (it was pretty gross)
We kept him in our bathroom for the first ten days and to introduce him slowly to the other cats— but after a couple of days, I noticed he had a cold. He could barely breathe out of his nose and was coughing and sneezing, snot was basically running out of his nose. I took him to the vet.
Since then, he has had two ten day rounds of antibiotics (clavamox), two weeks of forti-flora supplements and almost a month of imuquin. A few days ago, after stopping the antibiotics and forti-flora, he started having horrible diarrhea. So two days ago, I called the vet, who ordered compounded doxycycline (we don’t have it yet) and continued supplements.
I also stopped the imuquin that day to see if that isolated the diarrhea and he hasn’t had it in 36 hours. (last imuquin 48 hours ago). It seemed like the cold was almost gone but in the last day has again had an increase in snot, some eye discharge and continued coughing/sneezing.
He has been eating and drinking normally the whole time — he’s ravenous tbh— but we also decreased his wet food from two cans to one can per day due to the diarrhea (free feed dry). We are also making sure he doesn’t eat the adult cat food.
I just don’t know if i should give him these new antibiotics since the one test he was given did not show a bacterial cause. Should I? Should I start the forti-flora again? Any other suggestions?
I really want him to feel better (and stop snorking snot all over everything).
