How bad is a C as a freshman

I’m currently a freshman at a T3 US undergrad planning to go into quantum computing / quantum information long term (likely PhD route). This semester I decided to take a pretty aggressive schedule including introductory quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, and classical mechanics all at once, along with math/CS coursework.

It looks like I’ll end up with mostly B+/B range grades in my STEM classes, but there’s a real chance I get a C in quantum mechanics specifically. I think my overall GPA after freshman year will probably end up somewhere around 3.2–3.4.

I know this obviously isn’t ideal, especially since quantum is directly related to what I want to pursue. I am pretty devastated ngl. I’m trying to get a realistic sense of how bad of a position this actually puts me in for future grad admissions in quantum/physics/ECE-type fields (for top programs). I love the classes; I love the grind; I love research; I just dislike my grades.

For context:

  • I do have research lined up for the summer
  • My school has strong research access/resources in quantum
  • I’m planning to seriously rebuild my foundations over the summer and improve in upper-level coursework
  • I took these courses earlier than most students at my school, and there are more, quantum-upper level classes to take after this

I’m not looking for reassurance as much as honest perspective:
How much does a freshman-year C in quantum hurt for top grad programs if the trajectory improves afterward?
