Should I Switch Jobs?
I (M27, US) have a physically easy but mentally stressful job making low six figures (salary) in a fairly high COL area. Due to stress, I have been looking for a job for about a year, but in this market have found nothing better. Additionally, my current company has recently finalized and announced their acquisition by another corporation. Although no organizational changes are planned for at least a year and I have been given verbal assurances that I am safe, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. I have recently been offered a government job at a wastewater treatment plant about an hour's commute away. The job I have been offered is a slight pay reduction and much more physical than my current role, but I have heard really good things about government benefits and the pace of work in that particular organization. I have also been told that I would move up very quickly there, but again, you never know. My first instinct is to ride out my current employment and worst case take the severance and look for a job later, but the current state of the economy makes me wonder if I should stop looking a gift horse in the mouth and take the job.
