I’m based in the UK and recently applied for an internal role at my company.

Last month I got an email from Talent Acquisition saying they’d like to set up a 1st stage intro interview. I replied the same day confirming I was interested, they sent an invite for the following week, and I accepted.

Before the interview, I emailed politely asking for the salary range. No response.

On the day of the interview, Talent messaged me on IM asking if I’d seen the invite. I said yes and asked again about salary. They replied with the band (which was already on the job posting) and said it depends on experience.

I asked what the max of the band was, because I didn’t want to go through the process if my expectations were above it. No response.

For context, I’m already in the same band as this role (and another internal role I applied for previously), but I’ve seen roles in this band vary a lot. One I saw was significantly lower than what I currently earn. Since I don’t know the actual range, I have no idea how low or high this one goes.

I went ahead with the interview anyway. The hiring manager was very positive and even said informally they’d like to move me to a second stage.

The next morning, I emailed Talent again (politely) saying I’d like to understand the salary range so we can make sure we’re aligned and avoid wasting everyone’s time.

Still no response.

At this point, I’ll probably continue with the process, but I’m honestly a bit frustrated. I don’t want to spend time preparing for further stages if the salary isn’t even in the right ballpark.

Am I being unreasonable for pushing on salary transparency early, even for an internal role? Or is this just something people accept and deal with later?

Would appreciate perspectives, especially from people familiar with internal moves in UK companies.
