I want to make a mage build but I don't know what elements to use. Right now I'm thinking metal-acid but I'm not sure. Any recommendations?

I want to start taking the game seriously but I don't even know what classes to use. I have a warlock and conjurer but based off of things everyone is saying, I'm not even sure if these builds should be taken seriously. What's the best class for close-range fighting? Also, if you have a build for it, please link it.
