What 10/22 should I buy first?

I have a gift card to Scheels (it's a retailer that carries firearms) and I've wanted a 10/22 for a while because I see so much neat stuff on here.

What model do I by to start? I know I want a threaded barrel, but beyond that, I'm lost. There a thousand models and it's so overwhelming.

I'd love some help. I plan on using it as a range gun and an alternative to my regular mossberg 590a1 shotgun I usually carry around the farm.

I have been slowly trying to swap LEDs and MCPCBs in various convoy flashlights I own.

I have never soldered before, but I think I am doing a few things wrong because the few that I've made that work either break quickly or never work at all.

For example:

I made a Convoy S2+ with a SFQ43 and the 3v 8a buck driver convoy offers in 17mm.

It ran for maybe 30 seconds, then went blueish in tint, and then stopped.

Here is my process - The drivers come with the wire attached. I run that through the pill, feed it over the mcpcb, heat up the metal spot where I will be soldering, and then try to leave a dab of solder there. Then I use tweezers to place the wire on the dab of solder.

I realize I might have two mistakes:

  1. Do I need thermal paste?

  2. Should I go lower than needed when matching drivers to LEDs?

Also, my soldering is awful. The wire is rarely held on entirely and looks pretty rough. I'm actually buying a pinecil to replace my old junk soldering iron I got at an estate sale to try something new.

Any tips are welcome. I have a dozen or so drivers and a mess of old convoys with LEDs I don't like but I ruin them every time I try to make my own.

If you want a laugh, here is one I melted by having far too much going to the LED and terrible soldering:

CORRECTION:

I MEANT AMPS!!!!

I'm finally starting to build my own flashlights and I've used almost everything simon has on convoy's website. I have a ton of hosts and have made all kinds of monstrosities learning to solder and how different LEDs lead to different light, etc.

Now I'm looking at making a much bigger build, a triple SFQ-43 but I'm looking for a 30w or higher driver that will utilize a 21700. I have no idea where to look.

Any tips are welcome.

Also - any other company making cool hosts I could buy?

Here is a little triple sft-20 S2+ I made. It's awful, but it was fun. I have a lot of learning to do. Light just makes a mess of circles.
