Backing out of a contract I just signed.
I signed a two-year contract with a school today. I assumed I would be starting around August 28, but they said they would need me to teach before then. I wrote “maybe August 12” on the contract and then signed it. The reason I wrote “maybe” is that I have commitments at another school. Now that I am thinking about the whole ordeal, and about the way the boss was talking to me today, I am realizing that I do not really want to work there. Their demeanor was different today and I feel like I let myself be pressured into something. They have not spent any money on me besides a cup of coffee the boss bought me when I had my first interview with them. I have not received any training, equipment, or materials from them. They have not processed any visas or paid for any flights. Moreover, if I back out in the next few days, I will have notified them more than three months before the probation period begins. I asked ChatGPT, and it said I have a low chance of being legally liable for anything so long as I notify the school in the next couple of days. I feel like such an idiot. I have been with one employer for eight years, and I am not used to doing interviews or signing contracts.
