Just a fun little theory I thought up a bit ago. I was thinking about how each still life in the film seems to have different levels of intelligence and motor function, and I started wondering if they worked more like a single celled organism, or at least something similar to a very small organism like one you'd find under a microscope living in pond water. Sort of like if you put the "brain" of something like zooplankton into a human.
What I mean is, some like Barbara's still life react to outside stimuli to some degree. Like how some small organisms have basic eyes only to detect if something is blocking light so they can move out of the way. Meanwhile a still life like the bearded man is more similar to a single cell. Not complex in his genetic make-up, mostly just a base for future still lives of him to go off.
So while thinking about all that I realized the at least Barbara's and Mary's still lives both have a big seam down the middle and multiple faces... kinda like their undergoing mitosis... Maybe the first still lives are simple like the bearded man before they split into a new being, more complicated but still very wrong in their construction.
I know, a very weird crackpot theory, but I thought it was kinda interesting and I've always enjoyed that end of biology so I thought I'd share!
