The unfair parallels between get well soon & warning signs (interlude)
This is actually fu*king disturbing because one of ariana’s most openly caring songs almost reads like a warning that she eventually becomes the person nobody listens to.
get well soon sounds comforting on the surface but hearing it before warning signs makes the comfort almost eerie. she spends the entire song teaching someone how to recognize when they are disappearing into their own head, reminding them to take care of themselves, telling them they don't have to be alone & promising that somebody will answer then years later, warning signs put ariana on the other side of that exact equation.
the creepy part is how much she already understands what is happening. she isn't oblivious to the signs. she can recognize the pattern, recognize the instability, recognize the feeling of being pulled back in and still keeps returning. the person who once knew exactly what someone needed during their worst moments eventually becomes the person asking to be heard.
get well soon repeatedly creates the idea that someone will come looking for you when you disappear. warning signs gives you the possibility that ariana can disappear emotionally right in front of someone and still not be noticed. she can be physically present, emotionally exhausted, completely aware that something is wrong and the other person can still treat her pain a music in their ears.
the same cycle keeps happening until the person experiencing it starts questioning their own judgment. affection arrives, disappears, returns, and disappears again. eventually the instability itself becomes familiar.
the title warning signs feels almost cruel because the warning signs aren't hidden. they're everywhere. the terrifying part is that recognizing them doesn't automatically save you & that's where the connection to get well soon becomes almost tragic foreshadowing.
ariana once made a song about noticing when somebody is slipping away and making sure they know someone is there. later, she creates an interlude about being the person slipping away while desperately wondering whether anyone can actually hear her.
it's almost like the two songs are speaking across time. get well soon sounds like someone promising to find you in the dark. warning signs sounds like the same person realizing the light was never coming for her.
