So, I just started to setup my hermes agent with local models like Qwen3-8b or Devstral-Small-2507-Q3. Running it on a laptop with just 24 gb of RAM. But I always get an issue where my cron job would fire, deliver something to Telegram, and the "output" was just... raw tool call XML. Like the model was writing out what it wanted to do instead of actually doing it.

I tried to use OpenRouter Ring-2.6-1T and owl-alpha, but they both output the tool call as text and stop. tool_turns=0 in the logs every single time.

Curious what others are running, both locally and via OpenRouter free tier. What's actually executing tools reliably for you?
