Learn accounting software before the job or on the job?

My cousin recently graduated and asked how to learn tally before starting work. i told him just focus on basics and find a job, tally you can learn on the job. that's how i did it.

he ignored me and joined a coaching class anyway.

Two months in he's actually more comfortable than i expected. i still think hands on experience is the real teacher but maybe there's something to learning the basics beforehand so the first few weeks aren't overwhelming.

Anyone who learned accounting software before working, did it actually help when you got to the job?
