What’s your chances of getting a 45 based on your subject choice?
So a couple months ago I saw a post asking:
“Is it possible to get 45/45 with Physics HL, Math AA HL, Spanish A HL, English B HL, Economics SL and German B SL”
There seems to be a post like this every week.
but never a good answer 🤷♂️
And I thought, actually, we have the data to figure that out.
In fact we should have the data to figure it out for any subject choice and any target score.
The IB publishes the results from every subject, every year. So we can see the average grade and how many 7s are given out in each subject. (search for the IB statistical bulletin)
so, I built an IB score predictor to help my students and now I’m giving it away for free.
I’ve probably spent about 40 hours in total putting this together and making sure that it works right.
It was quite a fun project, the probability was a bit tricky because the events are dependent, but you can work with that, infact I think this sort of data might make for a good IA in Maths AI HL.
But I worked out the bugs and now I'm pretty confident in its predictions.
it's designed to help students understand their realistic chances of getting their target grade.
And therefore, know how much they have to revise, and which subjects to prioritise.
It's also helpful if you haven't picked your subjects yet. There are some subjects which give out more 7s and some subjects that have a very high mean grade, but there's not many which do both (except in languages)
I've shared this with my students and they found it really helpful, so I wanted to share it with the wider IB community ☺️
As with all my projects it's free and always will be.
All the best and I hope M26 enjoy their well earned break
