Game art direction - how u guys think
I’ve been thinking about game art direction during development, and wanted to share a simple priority breakdown we use.
First is gameplay alignment.
Even great-looking art doesn’t work if it hurts readability or player understanding. Art needs to support the game first.
Second is intentional / reasonable art direction.
Visual choices should have clear reasons tied to gameplay needs, not just aesthetics.
Third is balancing familiarity and novelty.
Too unfamiliar and players get lost, too familiar and it feels forgettable. We try to stay in the middle.
Overall, gameplay clarity comes first, then intentional design, and aesthetics on top of that.
Curious how you guys approach this.
