How do I get a tree to look like this?

I love the look of trees like this one. Kind of reminds me of the Banyan tree in Hawaii. I’ve seen magnolias and sweet gums that look like this in my area (southern Illinois). Can I make any tree look this way by pruning it, or does it come down to species selection, or a bit of both?
