New homeowner trying to save a neglected lawn

Hey everyone,

I bought this house over the winter (Eastern Ontario) and now that spring is here, I’m realizing the lawn has definitely been neglected for a while.

There’s a mix of decent grass, thick/coarse grassy patches, weeds, dandelions, violets, and some yellow/dead areas.

One thing I’ve noticed, especially in parts of the backyard, is that when I remove weeds, entire chunks of soil/root material come out with them and it leaves really patchy spots behind. It almost feels like some of the grass underneath is weak or dead already.

Now I’m worried that if I keep manually removing weeds everywhere, I’m just going to end up tearing apart the whole lawn.

So I’m kind of stuck on what the best approach is:
keep pulling weeds and repair the patches with
-topsoil/seed
-spray weeds instead
-or just leave the weeds for now and focus on getting healthier grass growing first

If this was your lawn, what would you do?
