How should I present my profile for Rice ED and similar schools? STEM research + service, but unsure whether my application feels focused
I am a rising senior applying to colleges this fall, and Rice ED is currently my top choice. I understand that Rice is a major reach and that nobody can predict admissions decisions. I am mainly looking for honest advice on how to present my application clearly and whether my profile has a coherent story.
I moved to the U.S. from India about five years ago and attend a public high school in Colorado. I am currently on an H-4 visa, which has limited my ability to pursue paid jobs, certain internships, and some scholarship opportunities. H-4 is considered international for admissions despite US residency.

I am interested in areas such as data science, applied math, biomedical engineering, or computational approaches to human-centered problems.
Main activities
1. University research: speech emotion recognition
I work alongside computer science doctoral students at a local university on a speech emotion recognition project. I have independently worked on data-preparation and feature-extraction pipelines, explored different audio features and embeddings, and observed how machine-learning models are evaluated.
2. Technology project for a faith-based nonprofit supporting communities in Tanzania
I identified a limitation in the nonprofit’s donation process: international donors did not have a convenient digital-payment option. I have been working on improving the website and adding an online donation system, with a focus on accessibility and ease of use. The organization supports clean-water, education, nutrition, and orphan-care programs.
3. FCCLA leadership
I have been an FCCLA officer for three years. When our faculty sponsor retired, the club was at risk of ending because of school requirements. I worked to identify a replacement sponsor, create a sustainability plan, and present it to the administration so that the club could continue for its 20+ members.
4. American Red Cross chapter
I am establishing the first Red Cross chapter at my school. I have received approval from the Red Cross, completed the constitution, and appointed an officer team. The school’s formal approval process opens in August, so I am still building the chapter and planning its first activities.
5. Hospital volunteering
I am in the processing of supporting the volunteer department on a project, managing volunteer schedules across different departments (ER, ICU, etc). Additionally I have completed 180+ hours at a local hospital, helping patients and visitors navigate the building, assisting individuals with mobility challenges, and supporting everyday needs in a fast-paced environment.
6. SAT-prep YouTube channel
I created 100+ short SAT-prep videos intended to make test-prep strategies more accessible to students who may not want to pay for expensive resources. The videos have reached 100,000+ total views.
7. Community involvement
I have served as a lector and catechism coordinator for younger children in my local Syro-Malabar Catholic community throughout high school. I also help translate for my immigrant mother in public settings such as hospitals and stores.
Awards (nothing major or national)
- Youth award from a foundation recognizing academics, STEM involvement, leadership, and service
- NHS
- AP Scholar
- Principal’s Honor Roll
- FCCLA letter recipient
- Bible quiz recognition
- Spanish class award
Essay topic
My Common App essay is about my last name, Jose, which my family pronounces like “rose” with a J. After moving to the U.S., I often allowed people to pronounce it differently because correcting them felt inconvenient. The essay reflects on how accepting “close enough” versions of my name made me notice other ways I softened my opinions or made myself easier to accommodate. It ends with my decision to correct people without apologizing for asking them to try again.
Questions
- Does my application have a clear theme, or does it still feel too scattered?
- Which three or four activities should receive the most emphasis?
- Should I try to switch from Honors Physics to AP Physics C: Mechanics for senior year if my school allows it?
- Would taking AP Precalculus alongside dual-enrollment Calculus I and II look unnecessary?
- What parts of my profile sound meaningful, and what parts sound like resume padding?
- What would be the most valuable use of my time before applying ED: improving my SAT, completing the Tanzania payment system, etc.
- How competitive would this profile be for schools such as Rice ED1, Notre Dame, WashU ED2, Emory, Vanderbilt, and CWRU?
I would appreciate direct feedback. I am not looking for reassurance. I want to understand what a skeptical admissions reader might question and how to describe my work accurately without overstating anything.
