I think I got over enthusiastic with my first use of this carpenters glue spreader. When I think back on the first video I saw of someone doing this with a bottle, they used a thin string with five or so inches between. I am slowly but surely realizing I didn’t need to use this great tool to cover 100% of the front and the back. 🫣 How do you do you use it? Do you leave a few inches between passes? I’m wondering if I should have gotten the 3” size instead of 6 “. What made me think of this is someone said it only takes them 1 regular sized bottle to do a king size quilt. I thought how?? Oh…

I finally got to try out this gadget, and it is wonderful. It is a carpenters glue spreader. My first effort at glue basting was a bit of a challenge because I was trying to squeeze the glue from the bottle. Then I got a catsup bottle and it came out easier, but sometimes too thick. Then I used a card to spread it out better…it was still better than crawling around on the floor. THEN an angel in this group shared about the carpenters glue spreader. I think several of us ordered one right away. I’m posting a few pictures so you can see it in action, because it was hard to picture at first. When you roll it across the batting, the black roller turns a grooved rod that delivers the glue to the black roller in a smooth layer. I got the 6” version. I started just putting a little glue in the top and doing one pass at a time, but eventually got braver and put enough in there to do 2 or 3 passes at once and then spreading the quilt.

I’m not sure I have the layers set up the best way. Because I have the unglued fabric rolled up, once I start to spread the quilt top, I’m doing it kind of blind with my hands under the roll. I can feel it being smooth, but it would be nice to be able to see it. Anyway, I’ll keep experimenting but I am so excited about this gadget. I was going to try using pool noodles (for the first time) but found I really didn’t need to.

I should also do it under better lighting. I kept touching the batting to make sure there was glue on it. You can imagine that slowed me down a bit because I had to keep getting the glue off my hands. (Oy!) still, with lots of double checking and taking my time I got this sandwiched in under 2 hours, and I wasn’t sweating or swearing!
