I Solved It

Here's the way it will go down: In the end, everybody has died except Boyd. The monsters run him down and are now closing in for the kill. Close up on Boyd's terrified face. Everything goes black... Cut to Boyd's eyes opening, then widen to show his face. He's much younger. Shot widens out to reveal that he's lying on a beach. It's the beach camp from Lost. As Harold Perrinau's character Michael Dawson, he turns to his son, Walt, and says, "I had the weirdest dream..." Credits roll as old Bob Newhart Show theme plays.

You're welcome.

... we simply take Ethan and the Man in Yellow at their word? That the townfolk are in a story. They are fictional. But somehow, they have gained agency. They've become self aware. Like Westworld, but with AIs instead of robots. If I were a fictional character who suddenly became aware of my limited world, wouldn't I try to escape? Wouldn't I dig up the floor, trying to see where the wires went? Only to find that the wires were just window dressing, incidental elements of the story, incomplete because the writer of the story never described them?
