Long Island, NY 7b. I planted 3 Bowman’s Root from 1 qt pots last fall. Two of them have grown maybe 1” tall this year and spread horizontally. The other is 5” tall and more mounded.
The photos I’ve seen show a much larger, 2’ plant. Is this normal for 1 year after planting, or could there be something wrong with the conditions? They are in full sun, so I’m thinking maybe they need less sun?
I watched a monarch lay eggs on a swamp milkweed in my backyard on Saturday. The other cats from eggs laid Friday hatched yesterday. So I went to check on this plant today only to find the top 1.5 feet of the leaves eaten off. Of all the plants, this deer ate that one. It also ate the top of an elderberry and threw my native hibiscus starters around. Evidence of the culprit from our Nest 😂
Natural selection is really putting my yard’s Monarchs to the test this year. So far the caterpillars this year have perished through:
- Torrential downpour
- Wasps
- Birds
- Now deer eating leaves and getting a caterpillar as a bonus
I need help ID-ing this one! I’ve had a lot of western honey bees, but this one’s abdomen seemed much more black.
