i'm curious if people interpret this footnote as regarding the Whole chapter, or just this particular part. the whole chapter has a bizarre textual layout. but why include this footnote

at this part specifically, right in the middle of it? are we meant to figure that johnny only refused to explain this particular part, and that the rest of this chapter (the sideways footnotes, the footnotes appearing far before the actual body text where they are referenced) is solely the invention of Zampano?
