Want to Learn Driving but Don’t Want a Car

Hey everyone,

Does anyone have experience learning and practicing driving in NYC?

I’m not a big fan of the idea of driving, and I’ve never done it before. But since America is not very public-transportation-friendly, I feel stuck with only the destinations I can reach without a car.

I’m also afraid of driving because I only want to rent a car from time to time. I’m not planning to buy a car in the city because I think it’s too expensive and not really necessary with the MTA.

Any advice or experience would be helpful.

Edit: I already have my learner permit. I got it by mistake when I applied for a state ID. I didn’t have enough points for the state ID, but it was enough for a learner permit. I passed the test the same hour without any preparation, lol.

I think my main concern is what happens after I get my driver’s license. If I only drive maybe 2–3 times per year, is that enough to feel comfortable with the car every time I rent one, if you know what I mean?
