Chance CS Research Kid Applying to UT and other Schools
Demographic: Male, Chinese, Texas, public HS->Pre-college system, Rising Senior
Intended Major: Comp Sci/Comp Eng/Info Sci(anything remotely related to CS)
SAT:
- SAT: 1540 superscore and regular(790 M, 750 R)
GPA:
- Pre-College GPA (4.0 scale)[this one is the one I report]: 4.0(pre-college does not do rank or weighted)
- Public HS GPA(only weighted out of 5.0): 4.38
Coursework:
- 7 APs done in HS previous to coming to pre-college(AP World, AP CSP, AP Euro, APES, AP Calc BC, AP Human Geo, AP Seminar) 5s on all except CSP and Seminar
- 11 Honors classes previous to coming to pre-college
- planned to take at least 28 college level courses in total at the pre-college by graduation(math is going to be cal2, cal3, linalg, and prob diff eq. english[I think this is analog to AP lang] for 2 semesters, us history 2 semesters[probably analog to APUSH], Chem for 2 semesters[prob analog to AP chem], CS for 3 or 4 semesters[probably analog to AP CSA and a bit further], physics for 2 semesters[analog to ap physics], a bunch of other classes like business mgmt and whatnot but those aren't rlly important)
Awards and Honors:
- AP Scholar w. distinction
- most likely National Merit Commended(got fried by the PSAT)
- IDK if this counts or not, but awarded 9500$ scholarship(so far, most likely 10k in total by 2nd sem in senior year) to conduct research at UNT and the pre-college
- USACO silver(washed ahh results bc I p much stopped doing USACO after 9th, but trying for gold next year)
- Qualed for TMTA state solo competition in 9th
- 2nd place in 10th grade and 3rd place in 9th grade for DMTA junior division sonata solo comp(small local competition)
Extracurriculars:
- Published research as co-author and major contributor(designed multiple circuits and had results posted in) in quantum computing regarding grover's algorithm to IEEE Quantum Week QCE26 (not allowed to share details due to the fact that QCE26 in-person event has not happened yet). Most likely will continue research developing on this pub to get another pub in a journal over the summer. Also going to go present at QCE26 in September at Toronto.
- Founder of an AI startup that tries to help kids learn music faster. Got backing by a couple of music teachers and students part of a local music academy(nothing big)
- Executive position in pre-college music club, co organized 10+ performances for the jazz band which helped raise money for blood drives, cancer drives, and etc.
- Played saxophone classically solo for all years of high school(repertoire includes pieces like Concertino Da Camera, Tomasi Concerto, etc.), soloed in 5+ events at the pre-college for the jazz band, part of band for only 9th grade.(not sure if I should do a performance portfolio)
- Created an AI database tool for a statefarm employee to reduce cold-calling and automatically sort out unlikely customers, which generated upwards of 200k$ worth of yearly income for said employee.
- Cofounder of a drone company/passion project seeking to break world record for quadcopter speed
- Cofounder and coding officer of high school previous to attendance at the pre-college, which had a size of 150+ people in a 600-ish student high school. Taught Java weekly to other students
- Lead a quartet of saxophones under my private lessons teacher as 2nd alto, which performed at Asiafest in our local city.
- Lead a duet for saxophone at an event at my local music academy in which we helped the event raise a few thousand dollars(not sure of actual numbers because that is mostly with the local music academy).
Letter of Recs:
- Letter of Rec 1: Research PI - knew him for 2 years, got a pub under him and talk to him regularly
- Letter of Rec 2: English prof -knew him for one year but spoke a good bit in his class

- REA/ED: Either ED Rice or REA Yale(currently idk which one to go for bc of price/prestige and wtv factors)
