Hello! I’m deciding whether or not I should be drum major or woodwind captain.

(For context: I auditioned for drum major freshman year, and got woodwind captain/band captain my sophomore year. Moving on to junior year, I’m not sure what to do.)

EVEN MORE CONTEXT: A lot of people (specifically woodwinds) loved me as woodwind and band captain. They listen, and are respectful towards me. For our show, I also got to conduct our third movement (so I was technically a side quest drum major for our show) so it gives me experience into drum major.

Listing out pros and cons!

PROS: I think everyone likes me as woodwind/band captain and as I’ve mentioned before, people listen to me. So I feel like if I’m drum major I’m able create my role even bigger.

PROS: Again, a lot of people respect me. And I’ve made more connections with the band people of my group so I think they might listen to me more just because they have experience of how I work

PROS: We have auditions for a flute solo. And I talked to the directors about it, and they’re letting me auditions for it! So if I take the role as drum major and possibly get the solo, I could do both! (Maybe, but not sure)

PROS: I love a challenge lowkey. I love band, and I feel like I would be able to fix a lot of things given the opportunity of a “higher” position than woodwind captain. I feel like I could do so much if I’m given the opportunity. The director see what I did with woodwind captain, so I feel like they know I can do things by being drum major.

NEGATIVE: If I audition for drum major, there aren’t many people for woodwind captain. (The woodwinds in my school faced A LOT of drama, so our leadership is a bit corrupt in a way. In my mind there are only 2 options in my head but my director loves favoritism even though I already explained how one of the people who are corrupt cannot be woodwind captain because of the thing that happened).

NEGATIVE: I also won’t be on the field :(. And I won’t get to play my instrument much if I’m drum major, I’m 1st chair for my section and I still love playing my instrument. But I’m scared I won’t have enough time to practice or anything like that.

NEGATIVE: MY CLASSES FOR JUNIOR YEAR. I’m starting to take college classes soon and I’m nervous I won’t be able to handle it. I’m very devoted to both my academics and band but I’m scared I won’t handle it well.

NEGATIVE: the pressure. Need I say anything else also, the drum major teacher. She’s very controversial, and I’m scared she’s going to ruin band in general for me.

SORRY FOR THE INSANE AMPUNT OF WORSS. BIT IF YALL HAVE ANY ADVICE LMK!!!!!! PLEASE!!! ANYTHIGN HELPS!!!
