End of term life insurance, continue at more expense?

My spouse had a 20 year term life insurance policy that just came to term. Without any notice, it appears they have either renewed it or transferred the policy to some other product at a higher premium -- about 2.5x what we were paying. I just wrote my agent to find out what's going on, figuring I would cancel whatever they're doing. BUT, wait, am I making a huge mistake? My spouse is in late stages of a terminal disease. Wouldn't I better off keeping the policy? Of course, I'll have to find out what this "new policy " actually is, but in principle, it seems smarter to keep it, doesn't it?
