Possible pickpocket attempt?

I had the weirdest experience at home depot today.

I was shopping, and had my purse in the cart where kids usually sit. I was looking at some solar garden lights, and a guy came up to me and started asking all these questions about the light I was looking at, like I was an employee.

He seemed like an average dad, average clothing. But he was trying really hard to keep my focus on the lights. I noticed his teenage son walking up behind me, standing really close to the cart where my purse was.

The guy kept asking me questions, and it was really distracting with the kid right behind me, and then his wife walks up and starts looking at me as well. Then he loses interest in the lights, and they all walked away.

It was such a weird interaction, that I keep thinking about it. Vancouver and Burnaby are pretty safe cities compared to the rest of the world, and home depot seems to be such a random choice for pickpockets, but the more I think of it, it feels like they were targeting me, but changed their minds.

Obviously keep an eye on your personal belongings in public.

Has anyone heard of anything similar happening recently?
