Just to preface here, there's no blame on Puerto Rico here whatsoever lol. What was supposed to be a nice family vacation with my family almost immediately went wrong. 2 days before our trip, my wife notices that her period has lasted longer then normal, after lots of googling and panicking she takes a pregnancy test which comes back positive, not good considering she's been bleeding for some time. Instant trip to the ER, and spend the whole day there, ultrasounds, bloodwork, etc (3PM - 1:30AM) ultimately they say its likely a miscarriage, they saw something in her fallopian tube but ruled it out as anything serious and basically told us we're good to travel but she'd have to visit a quest for bloodwork while in PR.
Fast forward, we arrive in PR and find out theres actually no more quests here anymore they got bought out about a month ago. Would've been nice to know, but our fault for assuming the doctor was right, we shouldve researched ourselves. After going back and forth with my wife's primary doctor, the ER that we visited, and a local lab, they essentially said our only option was to visit a local ER in PR for bloodwork. We arrive at the ER at about 4PM (same day we arrived in PR btw) and we finally get seen around 10PM where they bring her back and want to do an ultrasound as well as bloodwork. Wait a couple hours for results, they pull us in the back and tell us she's having what looks like an ectopic pregnancy, a bit more alarming of course, (also annoying because we had raised this concern at the previous ER and they ruled it out).
The doctor comes in, I guess he was home and rushed in when told according to him, we basically ask him if its possible for us to just fly home on the next flight and he advises against it as she's already got what looks to be heavy bleeding in the area. He says we can wait until the morning and redo the labs and if they remain steady we can choose to fly home but he warns us that if anything goes wrong in air, its very very bad. So essentially, they can perform the surgery here in PR or we can risk the flight home and if the bleeding gets out of control she could die. Ultimately we opted to have the surgery here, all went well, she's okay thankfully and thats what matters, but man this trip to paradise really turned into a traumatic ordeal. Thankful my wife is okay, idk that I'm willing to travel again anytime soon, if ever lol, and to rub some salt on the wounds, I just saw the first ER bill (from the ER back home) for a cool $5,000 lol, I dont even wanna look at the ER bill from here when it comes in 😭😅
