Ex won’t give 19yo info/access to his Roth IRA
My ex, unbeknownst to me, opened a custodial Roth IRA for my son when he was 17. Ex has refused to provide Son any info about the account, including what company it is with. Ex claims he has “complete control” over the Roth and it’s up to him as to when he wants to provide access to Son.
Son is now 19. He is in a good position to max out a Roth on a yearly basis, but given that he doesn’t know what his dad is doing with the Roth he opened, he hasn’t opened his own (and can’t make any contributions to the one his dad opened).
In case you can’t guess, Son and Ex are not on the greatest of terms…because of control issues.
Any ideas as what Son can do to get access to his Roth? I don’t want Son missing out on saving for retirement, but I don’t want him running afoul of the IRS if Ex happens to be making contributions to the Roth he opened.
We are in NC.
