Disney's Stage Adaptation might be the single best interpretation of the story
In my opinion, the stage musical of The Hunchback of Notre-Dame that premiered in Berlin in 1999 and moved on to the English version in the 2010s, might be the single best adaptation to date. One thing that almost every single Hugo-accurate film adaptation does, is completely ignore the emotionality between the characters, as well as kind of misunderstand how Hugo would have imagined his world visually represented. Now in this version they both combined the flavour and the emotionally tied to the story-music from Disney's 1996 animated feature and embraced the story's dark and ambiguous origins. And of course a great depiction of the core morals.
