Advice Regarding Extended Leave Without Pay Request
I am an ongoing APS4 employee with Services Australia and have been employed with the agency for approximately 4.5 years.
I am seeking advice regarding the possibility of requesting an extended period of leave. Due to ongoing personal and medical circumstances, including multiple unsuccessful IVF treatments in Australia, I am considering travelling to India for further treatment and family support.
At present, I have approximately six months of accrued leave available at half pay. Ideally, I would like to request up to 12 months leave to provide flexibility while undergoing treatment overseas, although there is a reasonable possibility that I may return to work within six months.
Before discussing this with my manager, I would appreciate advice on the following:
• Whether Services Australia commonly approves extended Leave Without Pay (LWOP) arrangements for ongoing employees.
• Whether requesting up to 12 months LWOP could have any impact on my ongoing employment status.
• Whether it would be preferable to use accrued leave initially and then apply for LWOP if required.
• Any practical considerations, risks, or recommendations when preparing and submitting such a request.
My intention is to remain employed with Services Australia and return to my substantive APS4 position once my circumstances allow.
I would appreciate any advice or guidance you can provide.
Kind regards,
