Best photorealistic AI image generators in 2026

Spent the past round 6 months doing a fair amount of AI photo work (mostly portrait). Sharing a few thoughts on which platforms stood out to me for photorealism.

  1. Mage (flagship model I used Mango V2)

Subscription, multiple photoreal models on one login. Mango V2 is Mage's exclusive house model. Natural language prompts, clean hands and characters locks a face from a single reference so it survives 30+ regens. That last part's the reason I pay.

The pitch: unlimited gen on Pro and above, character consistency that beats my Low Rank Adaptation (LoRA) stacks, no filter on glamour work

The reality: $30/mo Pro, $60/mo Pro Plus (where 4K lives)

Who it's for: photoreal cadence folks who'd rather pay flat than meter every gen

  1. Flux 2 by Black Forest Labs

Best subsurface skin scattering I've seen from any hosted model, and camera specific prompts (focal length, aperture, film stock) translate.

The pitch: editorial magazine fidelity on a single image, up to 10 reference images

The reality: closed weights, accessed through somebody's application programming interface (API). How filtered your access is depends on the host.

Who it's for: single best generation per prompt, not series work

  1. Stable Diffusion 3.5 Large by Stability AI

Still the baseline if you're going local. Open weights, runs on your own graphics processing unit (GPU), no platform filter once you're off hosted endpoints.

The pitch: total control, $0 per image, hundreds of community LoRA fine tunes

The reality: ComfyUI is a project. Plan on a weekend of setup and 12GB+ of video memory (VRAM).

Who it's for: tinkerers who want to own the whole stack

  1. Midjourney v7 by Midjourney

The one I grab when "make this beautiful" beats "match this reference exactly." Cinematic photoreal with less prompt scaffolding than Flux or Mango need.

The pitch: cinematic aesthetic that consistently lands

The reality: char consistency from refs trails Mango V2, subscription credit pricing gets pricey at volume, moderate content policy

Who it's for: cinematic and mood work, not literal subject accuracy

  1. CivitAI

Community marketplace where a lot of the open weight stuff above lives. If you're going local, you'll spend half your time here pulling LoRAs and checkpoints.

The pitch: massive library, photoreal fine tunes on every base worth knowing

The reality: payment processor history's been bumpy. Back up anything you depend on locally.

Who it's for: local stack folks who want community-trained checkpoints
