Short story about Sahara Death Journey

I am looking for a short story, written probably by a post war British or anglosphere writer, about crossing the Sahara in a vehicle with a few passengers, and people dying one by one, due to the driver being over confident and ill prepared, in other words a death march across the Sahara... a writer big enough to have a collection or be in a collection translated into Japanese and released in mass market paperback there. Published in the 90s or earlier. Thought it was Archer but apparently not.
