Ride-along expectations

I already did my two ride-alongs, but the last one left me feeling a little sour. Both times, I asked what was expected of me and what they needed, and told them to let me know what they need from me. The first ride-along we only had one patient and I just assisted with lifting a bariatric patient, the crew was pretty chill.

The second ride-along with a different crew, they said they would get me more involved. I took vitals, and I made sure to greet every patient. Made to sure to open and close the ambulance doors for them, clean the gurney, etc without them telling me. But it seemed like they were expecting me to know what they wanted and to do it without them telling me. They had their own streamlined process that was a little different than the standard patient assessment we’re taught in EMT school, but it seemed like I was annoying them for not knowing their workflow and not acting as if I am an official EMT along with them. I didn’t jump in to do my own assessment, I was just observing how they do their job, and asked questions when they came up in my mind. But by the end they were making remarks to each other that I wasn’t doing shit and just standing there.

I’m just wondering, what should I have done differently? What are the usual expectations for ride-along students?

Es difícil para los mexicanoamericanos integrarse en la cultura mexicana?

Digamos que son de segunda generación y hablan español con un acento ligero.
